Sources are creatures of all sizes and appearances who are essentially made of electricity, though only the snakes have their excess energy harvested due to their habit of curling around tall towers.

They tend to produce more energy than they need, so the excess naturally leaves the body and dissipates. Humanity built specially-made towers that absorb said energy, as well as special technology that allows them to store it long-term as reserves for when the snakes will leave.

There are many other types than the snakes, though only one known individual, Wye, is humanoid in appearance and has the ability to speak human languages.

Most cities have multiple of those massive towers, built in hopes that the snakes will settle there for a few decades. It gives humans electricity, and the snake a safe place to rest, so it’s a mutually beneficial arrangement. Some cities have tried to strap down the snakes to their towers and force them to produce more electricity, but it’s only a matter of time before Wye pays them a visit…and it likely won’t be pretty when he does.
